Great Gatsby: Dream Realization

Everyone has dreams, some are big and some are small but everyone has one. For Jay Gatsby; dreams can seem close but impossible to obtain. Jay Gatsby is a confusing man to understand, but his dream is very clear to everyone; he wants Daisy’s love to be his for keeping. Although there are many obstacles that stand in between him and his dream; he has an ambition to succeed where the odds are against him and Jay believes that it’s possible. After all Jay Gatsby states â€Å"Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can! † Jay Gatsby was a man on a mission, and that was Daisy. Daisy was his Holy Grail and he was a crusader trying to obtain her, but â€Å"foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams† which slowed down his progress. In the beginning Gatsby was a very shy man and was too embarrassed and nervous to come out and speak to Daisy. In fact Daisy didn’t even know that her ex-lover was still alive; she hadn’t communicated with him since the war. The reason being for Jay’s shyness of Daisy at the beginning was because of the lack of communication for the past four years. All Jay could do was buy his mansion close enough â€Å"so that Daisy would be just across the bay. Jay was known for hosting the biggest parties in the West Egg. The only reason he had parties though was so that maybe Daisy would â€Å"wander into one of his parties, some night, but she never did. † Fortune struck him when he met Nick and realized that Nick and Daisy were close. Seeing the opportunity, he took it and managed to get Nick to invite Da isy to tea and at the same time he would arrive and make his move to initiate his dream and hopes with Daisy. Jay was mad for Daisy, he loved her and wanted her like no other man would imagine. Although when the day came and Jay was with Daisy in Nick’s house, he fled to Nick’s side once he left the room. Jay was a nervous wreck. For a second Jay thought it was a â€Å"terrible, terrible mistake,† if that wasn’t enough Jay was also acting like a â€Å"little boy. † But when Jay left and Nick came back out â€Å"there was a change in Gatsby that was simply confounding. He literally glowed; without a word or gesture of exculpation a new well-being radiated from him and filled the little room. † It was as if he gained confidence and knew he could do it. With this he invited them to his house and there he managed to woo Daisy’s heart. Everything seemed to be perfect, Jay felt like he managed to accomplish his dream, but victory was still far and out of reach. Jay always spoke plenty of his past; he seemed to want to recover something from his past. Perhaps it was some idea of himself that had gone into loving Daisy. His life had been disordered ever since he last saw her four years ago; Jay wanted it all to return to a certain staring place and go over it all slowly. He wanted Daisy to go to Tom and say: â€Å"I never loved you. † Once she would do that, then they could decide upon more practical measures to be taken. Even though he managed to win her heart; he knew that he had not won the battle yet for his Holy Grail. He wanted to â€Å"fix everything just the way it was before. † A dream that he felt was doable and in his grasp. Everything falls apart somehow, no matter who you are it falls apart in the end. For Jay Gatsby, that â€Å"foul dust† that floats around his dreams and ends it once and for all was Tom Buchanan. Tom makes Jay’s dream fall apart. They’re all in a room having a splendid time, then Tom shows his hostility towards Jay and sends everyone into turmoil. Jay tell Tom that Daisy never loved him and the only reason she married him was because Jay â€Å"was poor and she was tired of waiting† for him. Tom argues back and tells Jay that he is wrong. They both look towards Daisy and ask her what she thinks, she is frightened with the fear of both their wraths, but she starts to take Jay’s side a little. During the end of the tumult everything seemed to be going in Jay’s favor until Tom managed to shock everyone with a fact about what Jay did in his past. Jay had managed to earn his riches through illegal activities. This hit Daisy hard; Jay tried to deny everything, but Daisy knew he was lying. Sadly with every word Jay said; Daisy seemed to be â€Å"drawing further and further into herself, so he gave up, and only the dead dream fought on as the afternoon slipped away, trying to touch what was no longer tangible. † He no longer had her, his dream was no more, and all hopes had perished. The realization for Jay’s dream was that it could not happen; it was bound to fail due to Tom. If this was not enough for Jay; when it came time for his funeral to be held Daisy was nowhere to be seen. Almost as if she didn’t care and didn’t want to have anything to do with him even at his funeral. Daisy never cared for him, but she was his dream and hopes that had failed in the end; even though she lost all interest in him he still loved her and believed that he had a small fighting chance. But the fact is that in reality he had lost the battle and the Holy Grail was gone forever. Jay had a big dream, and that was to fix everything to the way that it once was and to be with Daisy; he wanted to repeat the past. But in the end Nick was right and Jay was wrong; you can’t repeat the past, and with that Jays dream ended in failure.

Billy Elliot Family

Describe at least ONE idea that was worth learning about in the text(s). Explain why the idea was worth learning about in the text(s) as a whole, using examples of visual and/or oral language features to support your ideas. The film Billy Elliot directed by Stephen Daldry, is set in the miners town of Durham in the north east of Engand in the 1980’s. The film focuses on Billy Elliot, a 12 year old boy who is pressured and abused by his violent family as he tries to pursue his love of dancing in a predominantly miners town where ballet is for girls.An idea I felt was worth learning about tin the film was the idea of family relations. I believe this idea was worth learning about because it showed me why Jackie and Billy held such disdain for Billy’s ballet, Billy’s feelings as a result of his families pressure and that family bonds can overcome great adversity. Throughout the film, Daldry uses a range of film techniques to portray this idea of family relations. The first reason why the idea of family relations was worth learning about was because it showed me why Billy and Jackie held such disdain for Billy’s ballet.Throughout the film, Billy and Jackie represent the major obstacle Billy has to overcome to pursue his love of ballet. Following the recent death of Tony and Billy’ mother (Jackie’s wife) everyone in the family is wrought with grief. Adding to this is the intensity of the miner’s strike going on in the town which Jackie and Tony are involved in. In this tense home environment, the last thing they wanted was their son to be doing ballet, especially in the highly stereotypical society they lived in where ballet dancers are labeled as ‘poofs’. The main reason Tony and Jackie hated ballet so much, was because it reflects badly on the family.Tony and Jackie are great fans of boxing and push Billy towards it, even though he is blatantly useless at boxing. With the high pressure of the time they a re in, Billy’s doing ballet is the last straw and Jackie and tony are furious. An example from the film to show Jackie and Tony’s opposition to ballet is the dialogue when Jackie says to Billy: â€Å"Ballet is for girls Billy. Boys do things like boxing or wrestling, not friggin’ ballet! † The patronizing tone Jackie uses and the incredulousness in his voice shows his obvious disdain for Billy. Another example from the film to show Jackie’s hate of ballet is hen he sees Billy in the ballet class for the first time. The background sound of the piano playing cuts out, creating a suspenseful environment, and the close up shot of Jackie’s red, manic face shows his rage at Billy doing ballet. The curt dialogue, â€Å"You! Out! ,† seals the deal showing there is no hope in Jackie’s eyes for Billy to continue participating in ballet classes. The idea of family relations showed me that Jackie and Tony held such disdain for Billyâ€℠¢s ballet under the high pressure circumstances they were in, and they didn’t want their families reputation to be tarnished by having a ‘poof’ in the family.The second reason why the idea of family relations was worth learning about was because it showed me Billy’s feelings as a result of his family’s pressure. Ever since he first see’s Miss Wilkinson’s ballet class dancing in the boxing gym, he is hooked on ballet as it is a way for him to express his natural love of dancing. He secretly trains with the class by telling his family he is attending the boxing classes. However, when Jackie sees him, his ballet classes are in jeopardy as his family is strongly against him training.But Billy continues to train secretly with private lessons with Miss Wilkinson. The first feeling I was shown as a result of his families pressure Billy’s love of ballet and dancing. Billy’s perseverance under his family’s pressure to conti nue with ballet throughout the film showed me Billy loved ballet so much he was willing to stand up to his violent family. An example of Billy’s love of ballet is the close up shot of his face after he nails his first pirouette. His face shows a wide grinning smile, showing his happiness at succeeding at ballet.While scene is going on, there is a crosscut to a montage of Billy In his bathroom practicing pirouettes. This showed his commitment to ballet. Throughout the film, there are also many symbols to show Billy is ‘caged in’ by his family and he wants to break free from their traditions and do what he loves. An example of this is when Billy’s father first sees him doing ballet. Jackie is on the outside of the cage and Billy on the inside, symbolizing that Billy is trapped by his family’s traditions.Another example is that the scenes of the mining village were shot in a tight-knit claustrophobic way to show that Billy was again trapped by the trad itions of the town and was claustrophobic, when Billy is dancing however, the shot widens up to show that when Billy is dancing he is free from his families pressure and expectations. The idea of family relations showed me that through his family’s pressure and traditions, Billy’s love of dancing was very great by the way he continued on with it despite his violent family, and that he felt caged in and claustrophobic by the miners town.The final reason why the idea of family relations was worth learning about was that it showed me that family bonds can overcome great obstacles. Early on in the film, Jacke and Tony are strongly against Billy continuing with ballet. This is symbolized by dialogue such as: â€Å"Ballet is for girls Billy,† and close up shots are used showing Tony and Jackie’s faces showing anger and frustration when the conversation concerns ballet. This changes when Jackie sees Billy dance for the first time.He is moved by Billy’s pa ssion and talent for dancing. In this scene, defiant music is played while Billy dances for Jackie showing he is finally standing up to Jackie. From here on in the film, Jackie starts to support Billy in his dancing by attempting to go back to the mines and selling his wife’s jewellery, which is very special to him. This change was very significant to me, as it showed that family bonds and the love in families could overcome obstacles, financial and social, as great ad the ones the Elliot family overcome.An example of the change in the Elliot family is that at the beginning of the film, Tony and Jackie are often portrayed by low angle shots when their behavior is threatening to Billy showing they are dominant, but towards the end of the film they are portrayed in mid-shots when talking to Billy to show equality between the family members. An example of this is when Jackie is talking to Billy in the meadow. This idea of family relations showed me that family bonds could overco me great obstacles and that family love is unconditional, despite the harsh circumstances.In conclusion, the film Billy Elliot by Stephen Daldry focuses on Billy as he tries to pursue his love of ballet despite the pressure of his family and their traditions. The idea of family relations in the film helped me to understand why Billys family was so against ballet, what Billy’s feelings were throughout the film and how family bonds can overcome great obstacles. Throughout the film, Daldry uses a range of film techniques to portray Tony and Jackie’s obvious disdain for ballet, Billy’s love of ballet and the tumultuous time the Elliot family is going throughout following the death of Jackie’s wife and the miners strikes.

The development would accommodate a mix of uses and follow best practices, maintaining public space, high standards of design and sustainability. A high quality urban design recognising the distinctive urban character of the city and providing attractive and safe cycle/pedestrian routes through and around the area will create a sense of place while embracing low car use principles (Templeton and Taubenfeld 1987). The site referred to as Nestle South, here, is the southern side of the nestle factory site. The site area is approximately 7.41 ha, which is around 40% of the overall factory area. All buildings in the site have been demolished except those in the Conservation Area which has been retained for redevelopment as part of the application. To the east of the site is the Joseph Rowntree Memorial Library, the west consists of a block of buildings including; Almond Block Extension and the Hambleton Terrace, to the north is the remaining Nestle factory site. Law and government seem to be part of culture, but these are simply formal governance of the cultural values society. So culture is, essentially, everything involving more than one person in a society. This includes literature, music, art, value systems, behavioural norms, institutions, and the interpretation and dissemination of each of these. Food, a major part of culture, is both ritual and art. Music and visual arts are products, and also mirrors, of the culture. However, more than anything else, a society’s language and its texts represent it s culture.... (Most Canadians or Australians did not make the cut either.) British and Western Europeans were the sole providers of â€Å"literature†. Cultured people were â€Å"elite†, so anything readily accessible by the masses was not a part of culture. This meant that even though cultured texts, music and art were available to everyone, only the most cultured could truly understand them, if they even read them. It required a great deal of education to read Homer in the original language, or to appreciate Opera without subtitles, or ballet, or to read works of learned men and discuss the myriad values of each. Theoretically, culture includes modern discourses that bridge the various disciplines which include culture as part of their inquiries. Certain critical practices for cultural analysis are used to create that discourse concerning cultural activities, products, and institutions (Jere Paul Surber). It has expanded to this from the very narrow beginnings in Great Britain in th e 18 century. Certain British universities instituted cultural studies in the 1950s. With this kind of base, cultural studies aims for a practical critique of concrete and measurable factors that effect economic and political power. In its beginnings, culture was the pursuit of improvement of person among the aristocracy by virtue of education and practice. As more of the world's population moves on-line, new concerns will arise which did not confront the earlier generations. The new culture will demand different resources, services and technology than the old generations expected and used. Already we can witness a clash between the emergent culture and the entrenched culture. The largest conflicts occurring now are about sharing resources, the impending commercialization of the net, and the growing problem of computer crime. The Internet was born in the union of government and researchers, and for two decades afterwards remained mostly the realm of those two groups. The net began as ARPANET, the Advanced Research Projects Agency Net, designed to be decentralized to sustain operations through a nuclear attack. This nature persists today in the resilience of the net, both technologically and in its culture. ARPANET was phased out in 1990 and the net backbone was taken over by NSFNET (National Science Foundation). Since 1969 the main users of cyberspace have been involved in research or in the university community as computer experts or hackers, exploring the limitations and capabilities of this new technology. These people formed a cohesive community with many of the same goals and ethics. In addition to the homogeneity of the net, the small size contributed to a strong feeling of community. There has been some conflict between the hackers and the researchers over sharing resources, and philosophies about security and privacy, but on the whole, the two groups have co-existed without major incident. The newest of the members of the so-called old generation are the university users who are not involved in research work on the net. Generally these are the students using the net for email, reading netnews and participating in interactive real-time conversations through talk, telnet or irc. This wave of people integrated smoothly with the community as it existed. Antitrust practices are practices carried on by businesses that end up destroying perfect competition in the market. Antitrust laws are laws prepared to seek and promote healthy market competition by preventing anti-competitive practices by companies. Some of the illegal practices that constitute to antitrust behavior include corporate mergers, monopolies and price fixing conspiracies (Bailey, 2010). The Clayton Act of 1914 was passed by the U.S Congress. It was an antitrust law that was amended to stop and prevent practices that led to unhealthy competition in the market. The Clayton Act was amended in order to complement an earlier version of the antitrust law referred to as the Sherman antitrust Act of 1980. This was a federal law that sought to prevent practices that were harmful to consumers such as cartels, monopolies and other unfair business practices (California Association of REALTORS, 2005). Google Company One of the recent firms to be investigated for antitrust behavior is Google Company that leads the online searching industry. According to Weiss (2014), the firm recently was being investigated by Competition Commission of India (CCI) for claims that it abused its dominance in the online search engine industry by mainly promoting its own services over those of its rivals. This reason is considered to create unhealthy competition in the business as the search engine company dominates its rivals in what is considered almost a monopolistic market. Antitrust behavior brings about both pecuniary and non-pecuniary costs. Since it damages healthy competition in the market, monopolies can result and this has adverse effects to the prices of commodities.
